Welcome to my Build it Local blog! This blog is a school project of mine at West Chester University for my Advocacy and Activism Writing class. I am promoting the local lifestyle of growing a stronger, tighter-knit community. In many towns these days I see crowded housing developments and busy shopping centers. Neighbors don't even know each other because families stay inside all day, watching television or playing video games. Parents rush home from work to make dinner from a box or a can and soon enough are lounging in front of the television for the rest of the evening. What happened to those good old days where neighbor kids ran next door to play with each other and families invited other families over for dinner? What happened to kids helping parents cook dinner? What happened to families taking bicycle rides around town and stopping for a snack at the local ice cream shack? Or what happened to grandma's favorite recipes? With how much we have to rush around every day we don't have time to cook a homemade, wholesome meal every night.
Life is just too busy. My blog promotes going back to that easier, simpler way of life. Buying fewer electronic gadgets means parents don't have to work as much, which means families can spend more time together. With more free time, friends and families can go hiking, grow a backyard garden, cook dinner, go to the park, go boating, go swimming, play games, join a sports team, or visit a local historical society. The options are endless.
My goal is to create a community that actively cares about the environment, the local economy, and the health of friends and family. By buying local produce instead of processed food, people can enjoy fresh, delicious meals. Going outside and getting exercise will make people happier, healthier, and more confident. Taking care of the environment will cause fewer problems for the community as a whole. Building the local economy will make necessities cheaper, which means people will be required to work even less. Overall, I want communities to slow down and enjoy their lives instead of rushing through them and just trying to get by on a day-to-day basis.
